Concepción is a town located in the lowlands of eastern Bolivia. It is famous for being part of the Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos. These missions were declared a World Heritage Site in 1990. This means they are very important historical places recognized by UNESCO. Concepción was once a Jesuit Reduction, which was a special community set up by Jesuit missionaries.

Where is Concepción?

Concepción is the main town of Ñuflo de Chávez Province. This province is in the Santa Cruz Department of Bolivia. The town is about 500 meters (1,640 feet) above sea level. It is located about 250 kilometers (155 miles) northeast of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Santa Cruz de la Sierra is the capital city of the department.

Concepción's History

Concepción was started in 1699 by two Jesuit priests, Francisco Lucas Caballero and Francisco Hervás. It was built as a mission to teach Christianity to the Chiquitano and Guaraní peoples. In 1722, the village moved to where it is today. By 1745, about 2,000 people from different local tribes lived there.

Between 1753 and 1756, the beautiful cathedral of Concepción was built. This church is still a main part of the town today. In 1766, Concepción had 713 families and 3,276 people. In 1767, King Charles III of Spain ordered the Jesuits to leave. After this, the town was managed by regular government officials. Many people who lived there then moved away into the forests.

In the years that followed, the number of people in Concepción dropped a lot. This was due to sickness, lack of food, and poor management by the new leaders. Later, in the late 1800s, many local people were forced to work on rubber farms.

Languages Spoken

The most common language used every day in Concepción is a local form of Spanish called Camba Spanish. People in the town also speak the Bésɨro dialect of the Chiquitano language.
