About Concha Andreu
Early Life and Education
Concha Andreu was born in 1967 in Calahorra, a town in the La Rioja region of Spain. She went to the University of Salamanca to study biological sciences, which is the study of living things. Later, she earned a special master's degree from the University of Zaragoza. This degree focused on viticulture, which is growing grapes, and oenology, which is the science of making wine.
Starting in Politics
Concha Andreu began her political career in 2011. She was elected as a member of the Parliament of La Rioja. This means she became a representative for the people of La Rioja in their regional government.
In 2015, she became the main candidate for the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) to become the President of La Rioja. In that election, her party won 10 out of 33 seats in the Parliament. After the election, she became the spokesperson for her party in the Parliament.
Becoming President of La Rioja
Concha Andreu ran again for President of La Rioja in the 2019 regional election. This time, her party, the PSOE, won 15 out of 33 seats. This was a big achievement because it was the first time since 1991 that the PSOE became the largest party in the Parliament of La Rioja.
On August 27, 2019, Concha Andreu officially became the President of La Rioja. She achieved this after her party made an agreement with other political groups, Podemos and United Left. She made history by becoming the first woman to hold this important position in La Rioja.
Role in the Spanish Senate
After her time as President of La Rioja ended in 2023, Concha Andreu continued her work in politics. In the 2023 Spanish general election, she was elected to the 15th Senate of Spain. The Senate is part of Spain's national parliament, similar to a country's upper house of representatives. She represents the region of La Rioja in the Senate.
