The Confederate Monument in Augusta, Kentucky, honors eight unknown soldiers. These soldiers fought for the Confederate side during the American Civil War. They died while attacking Augusta in September 1862.

On September 27, 1862, a Confederate leader named Colonel Basil W. Duke tried to take over Augusta. But a local defense group, about 100 people, fought back. They even had help from gunboats on the river. The Confederates were forced to retreat. Eight of the Confederate soldiers who died were buried in Payne Cemetery. In 1903, this monument was placed where they were buried.

About the Monument

The monument is a granite tombstone. It stands four feet tall and has a base three feet wide. At the very top of the tombstone, you can see a symbol of the Confederate battle flag.

The monument was put in place 41 years after the battle. The United Confederate Veterans, a group for former Confederate soldiers, helped pay for it. They raised $550 for the monument.

A Historic Landmark

On July 17, 1997, the Confederate Monument in Augusta became a special landmark. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important historical sites across the United States.

This monument was one of 61 monuments from the Civil War in Kentucky added to the list that day. It is the monument furthest north on the list that honors only Confederate soldiers. Another monument nearby, the Veteran's Monument in Covington, honors soldiers from both sides of the war.

Visiting the Monument

You can reach the monument from a parking area near the river. This parking spot is on the west side of Kentucky State Road 8. From there, you can go down some stairs to find the monument. The only other way to get there is to walk through private yards and up a steep hill in Payne Cemetery.
