The City of Toronto officially named it a historic property. This happened on November 26, 1975, under the Ontario Heritage Act.

About the Building

The Confederation Life Building is located at 2–14 Richmond Street East. You can find it on the north side of Richmond Street East. It stretches between Yonge Street and Victoria Street.

Its Design and History

This building was once the main office for a company called Confederation Life. In May 1889, this company held a contest. They wanted architects to design their new headquarters.

The winners were architects Wilm Knox and John Elliot. Their company, Knox, Elliot and Jarvis, was quite new. Even so, they won the chance to design this important building.

A Big Fire and Restoration

In June 1981, a fire caused a lot of damage. The top floor of the building was badly burned. The roof was also destroyed.

But the building's main structure stayed strong. It was fixed up and restored. New businesses moved in after the repairs. The main address is now 20 Richmond Street East. There are also other entrances at 157 Yonge and 106 Victoria.
