The famous macarons called "Luxemburgerli"

Confiserie Sprüngli is a famous Swiss company that makes luxury chocolates and pastries. It is located in Zürich, Switzerland. The company started in 1836 with David Sprüngli. It has been a separate company from Lindt & Sprüngli since 1892. Today, Sprüngli is most famous for its Luxemburgerli, which are small, delicious macarons. You can find Sprüngli shops and cafés in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and the United Arab Emirates.

History of Sprüngli

How it All Began

The company started in 1836. That year, David Sprüngli bought a pastry shop called Konditorei Vogel in Zürich. He and his son, Rudolf Sprüngli, began making chocolates in 1845. Their company was called David Sprüngli & Fils.

The Famous Shop Opens

In 1859, they opened a well-known shop on Paradeplatz along the Bahnhofstrasse. This new shop had a special "refreshment room." Important people in Zurich would meet there for coffee and cake.

A Family Split

In 1892, the part of the business that made chocolate became a separate company. This new company is now known as Lindt & Sprüngli. Johann Rudolf Sprüngli, Rudolf Sprüngli's son, took over the chocolate factory. His brother, David Robert Sprüngli, continued to run the pastry and confectionery business.

A Luxury Brand is Born

In 1956, Richard Sprüngli took charge of the confectionery business. He helped make Sprüngli a luxury brand. A year later, Sprüngli started selling the first Luxemburgerli. These macarons were invented by a Sprüngli pastry chef from Luxembourg. Today, Luxemburgerli are the company's most popular product. About 650 kilograms (1,433 pounds) of them are made every day!

Modern Leadership

Since 1994, the company has been led by brothers Tomas and Milan Prenosil. They are the sixth generation of the Sprüngli family to run the business. In 2020, Sprüngli launched a special chocolate called Grand Cru Absolu. It is made from 100% cocoa beans. In 2022, they also introduced vegan chocolates called Grand Cru Bâtons.

Who Runs Sprüngli

The Sprüngli company has been led by different family members over the years.

  • David Sprüngli (1836–1859) started the company.
  • Rudolf Sprüngli (1859–1892) took over next.
  • David Robert Sprüngli (1892–1924) led the confectionery after the split.
  • Hermann Sprüngli (1924–1956) followed him.
  • Richard Sprüngli (1956–1994) made it a luxury brand.
  • Milan and Tomas Přenosil (1994–present) are the current leaders. They are nephews of Richard Sprüngli.

Products and Shops

Where Products Are Made

In 1961, Sprüngli moved its main production to Dietikon. This was because the original location on Paradeplatz became too small.

What Sprüngli Sells

Sprüngli has over 1,000 employees and sells more than 2,000 different products. These include chocolates, ice cream, and baked goods. The company earns over 100 million Swiss francs each year.

Sprüngli Shops

Sprüngli has 29 shops, and some of them also have restaurants. The main store is still on Bahnhofstrasse and Paradeplatz in Zürich. You can also find smaller shops in other Swiss cities like Basel, Bern, Winterthur, and Zug. Sprüngli products can even be sent worldwide by air mail.

International Locations

In 2017, Sprüngli opened a shop in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. There are now three shops in the UAE. Sprüngli also opened new locations at Munich Airport in 2022 and Vienna Airport in 2022.

The Paradeplatz Café

The Sprüngli café on Paradeplatz is a famous meeting spot. There's a fun story that young men used to turn over their coffee spoons in their cups to show they were looking for a date. However, the company says this is just a myth! It probably came from a time when it was hard for people to meet new friends in Zürich.

Working with Airlines

Since March 2021, Sprüngli has worked with Swiss International Air Lines. This means you might find their delicious treats on Swiss flights!
