David Sprüngli was a Swiss businessman who lived from 1776 to 1862. He is famous for starting a sweet shop in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1836. This shop, first called David Sprüngli & Son, is now known as Confiserie Sprüngli, a very well-known chocolate and pastry company.

David Sprüngli's Early Life
David Sprüngli was born on October 20, 1776, in a town called Andelfingen in Switzerland. His parents were Hans Heinrich Sprüngli and Elisabetha Karrer.
Starting His Sweet Business
Becoming a Baker
In 1819, David Sprüngli was a young baker who traveled to different places to learn his trade. He found work at a well-known bakery in Zürich that made sugar treats.
In 1836, the owner of the bakery passed away. David Sprüngli then bought the business from the owner's wife. This was a big step for him.
Founding Sprüngli & Son
Later in 1836, David Sprüngli bought a building and a shop on Marktgasse, a street in Zürich. Here, he officially started his own company. He named it David Sprüngli & Son. His son, Rudolf, worked with him in this new business.
Moving to Paradeplatz
The company grew quickly. In 1845, David Sprüngli & Son moved to a new, larger location. They opened their shop on Paradeplatz in Zürich. This square is still a very famous place in the city today.
Partnership with Lindt
Also in 1845, David Sprüngli's company formed a partnership with another famous chocolate maker, Rodolphe Lindt. This partnership eventually led to the creation of the well-known company Lindt & Sprüngli.
David Sprüngli's Family
David Sprüngli was married twice. In 1804, he married Regula Rosenberger. After she passed away, he married Katharina Schwarz in 1812.
With Katharina, he had two sons:
- David Sprüngli-Schmidlin, born in 1814
- Rudolf Sprüngli-Ammann, born in 1816
His sons later helped to continue and grow the family business.
David Sprüngli's Later Years
David Sprüngli lived a long life. He passed away on February 14, 1862, when he was 85 years old. He left behind a successful business that is still famous today for its delicious chocolates and pastries.
