The Congo peafowl (Afropavo congensis) is a unique type of peafowl. Local people sometimes call it the mbulu. This special bird lives only in the Congo Basin area of Africa.
It is one of just three living species of peafowl in the world. The other two are the Indian peafowl, which comes from India and Sri Lanka, and the green peafowl, found in places like Burma and Indochina.
What Makes the Congo Peafowl Special?
The Congo peafowl has features that remind us of both peafowl and guineafowl. This mix of traits is very interesting to scientists. It might show that the Congo peafowl is a kind of link between these two different bird families.
