Constance Talbot (born Constance Mundy, 1811–1880) was a talented English artist. Many people believe she was the first woman to ever take a photograph! This early photo was a bit blurry. It showed a short poem by an Irish writer named Thomas Moore.

Who Was Constance Talbot?

Constance was born on January 30, 1811. Her family lived in a place called Markeaton in Derbyshire, England. She was the youngest daughter of Francis Mundy. He was a Member of Parliament, which means he was elected to help make laws for the country. He served from 1822 to 1831.

Her Marriage and Photography

In 1832, Constance married William Henry Fox Talbot. He was a very important person in the early days of photography. He helped create many of the first ways to take pictures.

During their honeymoon in Italy in 1833, something interesting happened. William realized that Constance was a much better artist than he was. He wanted to find a way to capture beautiful views without having to draw them by hand. This idea led him to invent the negative-positive process of photography. This is the basic idea behind how cameras worked for a long time!

Constance herself tried out this new photography process. She experimented with it as early as 1839.

Her Art Today

Constance was also a skilled painter. Her beautiful watercolour paintings and drawings were kept at Lacock Abbey. This was the home of her husband, William Henry Fox Talbot.

Recently, these artworks were made public by the National Trust. They were scanned and put online for everyone to see. This means we can now enjoy her artistic talents!
