Lady Constance Stewart-Richardson (born Mackenzie; 1883–1932) was a British dancer and author. She was known for her bold dancing style and for writing a book about dance.

Biography

Early Life and Family

Constance was born into an important family. Her father was Francis Mackenzie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, the 2nd Earl of Cromartie. Her sister was Sibell Lilian Blunt-Mackenzie, who became the 3rd Countess of Cromartie. Her grandparents were also very important figures in British society.

In 1904, Constance married Sir Edward Austin Stewart-Richardson. He was a Baronet, which is a special title in Britain. They had two sons together. They lived in a large home called Pitfour Castle in Perthshire, Scotland.

A Daring Dancer

Constance loved to dance. In 1910, she performed dances that were quite daring for her time. She danced in theatres for people who paid a small fee. This kind of performance was not usually done by noblewomen like her. King Edward VII was not pleased with her performances. Because of this, she was not allowed to attend events at the Royal Court. This was a big deal, as it meant she was excluded from important social gatherings.

In 1913, Constance danced in a show called Judith in Vienna. In the same year, she also published her own book. It was titled Dancing, Beauty, and Games. Later in 1913, she traveled to New York. There, she joined a French actress named Polaire for her tour in America.

Later Years

Constance's first husband, Sir Edward, was an officer in a military group called the Black Watch. Sadly, he was killed in 1914 during a major battle in World War I.

In 1921, Constance married again in London. Her second husband was Mr. Dennis Leckie Matthew. He was a former officer who had worked for the British Government. He observed German activities in South America before the war. He also worked as a King's Messenger, carrying important messages for the King. Constance and Dennis had a daughter named Anita. Both Constance and Dennis passed away in the early 1930s. Anita was then raised by her Scottish relatives from her mother's side.
