Becoming Queen of Majorca
King James III wanted to have a good relationship with the kingdom of Aragon. To make this happen, he married Constance. Their wedding took place in Perpignan on September 24, 1336.
A Royal Family
Constance and James had two children together:
- James (born around 1336 – died January 20, 1375). He later claimed to be the rightful king of Majorca.
- Isabella (born 1337 – died 1406). She also claimed to be the rightful queen of Majorca.
Conflict and Loss of the Kingdom
In 1342, King James III refused to promise his loyalty to Constance's brother, Peter IV of Aragon. This led to a short war between the two kings.
Losing Majorca
During this war, which lasted from 1343 to 1344, King James and Queen Constance were forced out of Majorca. Peter IV of Aragon then took over the Balearic Islands, including Majorca. These islands became part of the Crown of Aragon.
Later Life and Death
Two years after losing the kingdom, Constance passed away in Montpellier in 1346. She was only about 27 or 28 years old. Her husband, James, and her two children lived longer than she did. The year after Constance died, King James remarried Violante of Vilaragut.
