Constantine I of Scotland facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Constantine I was an early king in what is now Scotland. He was the son of Kenneth MacAlpin, who many people consider the first king of Scots. Constantine ruled the Picts from about 862 or 863 until 877. He died in a battle against Viking invaders in a place called Fife. Even though he was called "King of the Picts" back then, today he is often known as a "King of Scots." This is because his father, Kenneth I, helped unite different groups in Scotland.

When and Where Was He Born?

We don't know a lot about when Constantine I was born, which is common for kings from that time. Historians believe he was born between 836 and 844. His birthplace was Iona, an island in what is now Argyllshire, Scotland.

Constantine was the son of Kenneth MacAlpin, who was a powerful king. His mother's name is not known. He was also the nephew of King Donald I and the brother of Aed, who would later become king.

Becoming King

Constantine became king after his uncle, Donald I, passed away in 862. It's not clear if his rule officially started in 862 or 863. However, most historical records suggest he began his reign in April 862. At that time, he was known as the "King of the Picts."

His Death in Battle

In the year 877, Constantine I was fighting against Viking invaders. The battle took place in Fife, a region in Scotland. Sadly, Constantine was killed during this fight.

After his death, the throne went to his brother, Aed. Constantine's own son, Donald II, was too young to rule at the time, being only about 10 years old. When Aed died in 878, the throne passed to Giric, who was Constantine's cousin.

Later, Constantine's son, Donald II, finally became king. He ruled from 889 to 900. Donald II was the last king to be called "King of the Picts." After him, all future rulers were known as "King of Alba," which was an early name for Scotland.
