Áed (pronounced "Ayth") was a king of the Picts who ruled for a very short time, from 877 to 878. He was the son of Kenneth MacAlpin, who was a powerful king of Scots. Áed was born around the year 840, likely in Scotland. His reign lasted less than a year before Giric, a relative, took the throne.

Who Was King Áed?

Áed, also sometimes called "Ethus," was an important figure in early Scottish history. He was part of the House of Alpin, a royal family that ruled over the Picts and Scots. His father, Kenneth I, was famous for uniting different groups in Scotland.

Áed's Early Life

Historians are not completely sure about Áed's exact birth date. However, it is believed he was born around 840 AD. He was likely born in Scotland, though some records suggest he might have been born in Ireland. This was common for royal families at the time.

Áed's Family Connections

Áed was the son of Kenneth I, a very important king. His mother's name is not known. Áed had a brother named Constantine I, who also became king. He also had a sister, Princess NN Ingen Cináeda.

Áed's Short Reign

Áed became king in 877 when he was about 36 or 37 years old. He took the throne after his brother, Constantine I. His time as king was very brief.
