Giric, also known as "Gregorius the Great," was a king who ruled the Picts from 878 to 889. He stopped being king in 889, possibly by choice or because he was removed from power. He died around the year 890. During his time as king, he shared power with Eochaid, who also claimed the throne of the Picts.
Giric became king after King Áed died in 878. Some old pictures show Giric with a beard and mustache, looking like he was in his 50s when he became king.
Early Life
We don't know the exact date Giric was born, but it was likely around the year 832. He might have been the son of King Donald I. This would make him the nephew of Kenneth MacAlpin, who was Scotland's first king. Giric supposedly married a woman named Kong Garic MacAlpin. Together, they may have had a daughter named Prinsesse Maravilla Forbes.
Becoming King
In 878, Giric became the king of the Picts and Scots after King Áed's death. He was one of the last kings of the Picts. He ruled alongside Eochaid, who was the king of Strathclyde. Eochaid also claimed the throne after Áed died. Some records suggest that King Áed might have chosen Eochaid to rule after him.
Eochaid's Role
Eochaid was another person who claimed the throne. His time as king is sometimes debated by historians. He was born around 860, which means he was almost 30 years younger than Giric.
End of His Reign
Giric's rule ended in 889. It's not clear if he chose to give up his power or if he was forced to leave the throne. Records show that when Giric stopped ruling, Eochaid's rule also ended.
Death
Giric died in Scotland in 890. We don't know many details about his death. He was no longer king when he died, as Donald II had taken the throne after Giric's rule ended. We do know that Giric did not die in Ireland.
