Constantine Kollias (Greek: Κωνσταντίνος Κόλλιας) (1901 – 13 July 1998) was a Greek lawyer and judge. He held an important legal position in Greece. He later became Prime Minister during a time when a group of military officers, known as the military junta, ruled the country. This period lasted from 1967 to 1974.
Early Life and Career
Konstantinos Kollias was born in 1901. His birthplace was the village of Stylia. This village is located in Xylokastro-Evrostina, in the region of Korinthia, which was then part of the Kingdom of Greece.
Kollias worked as a senior lawyer and judge in Greece. He held the position of Attorney General. This means he was a chief legal officer. He served in this role during a difficult time for Greece. This was from 1941 to 1944. During these years, Greece was occupied by foreign forces.
Time as Prime Minister
On April 21, 1967, a group of military officers took control of Greece. This event is called a coup d'état. It meant they took power from the elected government.
On the same day, Konstantinos Kollias was named Prime Minister. He was chosen by the military group, or "junta." However, his time as Prime Minister was short.
About eight months later, in December 1967, King Constantine II tried to take back control. This attempt was not successful. After this, Kollias was replaced as Prime Minister. Georgios Papadopoulos, who was a leader of the military coup, took over the role.
Later Life and Death
Konstantinos Kollias passed away on July 13, 1998. He was 96 years old at the time of his death. He died in Athens, the capital city of Greece.
