Content and language integrated learning facts for kids
Content and Language Integrated Learning, or CLIL, is a cool way to learn a new language. Instead of just studying grammar and words, you learn a foreign language and other school subjects at the same time! Imagine learning about history or science in Spanish or French. That's CLIL!
What is CLIL?
CLIL helps you use a new language right away. You don't just learn about the language; you learn through it. This makes learning more fun and useful. It's like learning to ride a bike by actually riding it, not just reading a book about bikes.
The Four C's of CLIL
Many people describe CLIL using "Four C's." These are important parts of how CLIL works:
- Content: This is the school subject you are learning, like science, history, or math. You learn new facts and ideas in this subject.
- Communication: This is about using the new language to talk, listen, read, and write. You practice speaking and understanding the language while learning your subject.
- Cognition: This means thinking and understanding. CLIL helps you think deeply about what you are learning. It also helps you think in the new language.
- Culture: This is about understanding the culture of the language you are learning. You might learn about traditions, history, or how people live in countries where that language is spoken. Sometimes, people use "Community" instead of "Culture." This means learning how to use the language to connect with others.
Where Did CLIL Come From?
CLIL grew from older ways of teaching languages. One example is bilingual education, which is popular in places like Canada. In bilingual schools, students learn in two languages. Another idea was "Content-based Instruction." This was used to teach ESL (English for people who speak other languages) and EFL (English for people learning it in their home country).
CLIL has become very popular in schools, especially for kids your age. It's used a lot in Europe, like in Spain. But many other countries around the world are also starting to use CLIL. It's a great way to become really good at a new language!
