Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Imagine a super cool poetry battle where the prize was someone's freedom! That's kind of what the Contention of the Bards was all about. It's a famous old Welsh story. It tells about a young poet named Taliesin. He faced off against the best poets of King Maelgwn Gwynedd. The contest happened in a place called Deganwy in the Kingdom of Gwynedd.

The Great Bardic Contest

A Young Poet and a Powerful King

The main characters in this legend are Taliesin and King Maelgwn Gwynedd. Taliesin was said to be only 12 years old. He was the special poet, or "bard," for a man named Elffin ap Gwyddno. A bard was someone who wrote and sang poems and stories. King Maelgwn was a very powerful ruler. He had his own group of talented court poets. Their leader was a bard named Heinin.

A Contest for Freedom

The story says that King Maelgwn had captured Elffin. Taliesin wanted to free his friend. So, he bravely challenged the king's bards to a contest. This wasn't just any poetry contest. It was a battle of words and wit. The prize was Elffin's freedom.

The Young Bard Wins!

Taliesin, even though he was young, was incredibly skilled. He won the contest! His amazing poems and clever words beat the king's experienced bards. Because he won, Elffin was set free. Taliesin also made a prediction. He said that King Maelgwn would die from a sickness. This sickness would come from a swamp. The legend says this prediction came true.

Ancient Songs and Stories

Some old poems are linked to this famous contest. Two of them are called Prifardd ydwyf i Elffin. This means "Primary Chief Bard am I to Elffin." The other is Cân y Gwynt, or "Song to the Wind." These poems are very old. They were written down much later in history. They are found in old handwritten books called manuscripts. Even though they are old, they help us imagine the contest.
