Cookamidgera is a small town in New South Wales, Australia. It is located within both the Parkes Shire and Forbes Shire areas. This town is part of the Central West region of New South Wales.

What is Cookamidgera?

Cookamidgera is a quiet rural town. It is known for its history connected to the railway. The town is surrounded by beautiful Australian countryside.

A Bit of History

The town was not always called Cookamidgera. It was first known as Bindegandri. On 29 August 1895, its name was officially changed to Cookamidgera. This name change happened just a few years after the railway arrived.

The Railway Connection

The Broken Hill railway line opened in 1893. Cookamidgera became a stop on this important line. For many years, trains brought people and goods to the town. Passenger services stopped in the 1970s. Today, people who want to travel by train go to the nearby Parkes railway station.

Life in Cookamidgera Today

Most shops and businesses have moved from Cookamidgera. People now get their supplies and services in the larger town of Parkes. However, Cookamidgera still has some important community services.

Community Services

The town has a local Rural Fire Service brigade. This group helps keep the community safe from bushfires. There is also a church for local residents. A building called the Mechanics Institute is also in the town. These institutes were once places for learning and community events. The old rail platform is still there too, reminding everyone of the town's railway past.
