Cool-A-Coo facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Cool-A-Coo was a special kind of ice cream sandwich. It had creamy vanilla ice cream between two yummy oatmeal cookies. The whole thing was then dipped in chocolate! For over 25 years, it was a very popular treat in the Los Angeles area. It was even the official ice cream sandwich for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. Sadly, Cool-A-Coo stopped being made in August 2016. So, you can't buy them anymore.

The Story of Cool-A-Coo

How Cool-A-Coo Began

A man named Leo Politis first created Cool-A-Coo. He made them in El Monte, California. His company had about 30 employees. They worked hard to make about 3 million Cool-A-Coos every year. This was because so many people loved them! Before the early 1990s, fans at Dodger Stadium ate about 4,000 Cool-A-Coos during each game.

Leaving and Returning to Dodger Stadium

Even though it was the Dodgers' original ice cream sandwich, Cool-A-Coo disappeared from Dodger Stadium in 1998. This happened when Peter O'Malley sold the Dodgers team. Many fans missed the treat. They sent thousands of requests through a suggestion box. This box was set up by Stan Kasten, who was the CEO of the Dodgers. Because of these requests, Cool-A-Coo made a big comeback to the stadium in 2012.

Making the Comeback Happen

After Cool-A-Coo was removed from Dodger Stadium, Leo Politis sold his company. He also sold the Cool-A-Coo trademark. The new owner, Sweet Novelty Inc., stopped making the dessert. To bring Cool-A-Coo back, the Dodgers team had to make a deal with Sweet Novelty. They also worked with other ice cream sellers. This helped them compete with new food vendors at the stadium. Levy Restaurants became the new food provider for Dodger Stadium. They worked to create a new recipe. This new recipe kept all the important parts of the original Cool-A-Coo.

Perfecting the New Recipe

To make the new Cool-A-Coo just right, they created a few test versions. Employees at Dodger Stadium tasted these test versions. These employees had eaten the original Cool-A-Coo. They felt that the test versions did not taste quite the same. The ice cream was less sweet and thicker. They also found a missing ingredient in the oatmeal cookies. It was cinnamon! Adding cinnamon helped make the new recipe taste like the original.

The End of Cool-A-Coo

In 2016, the Cool-A-Coo was stopped. It is no longer made or sold.
