What Does the Bridge Look Like?
This bridge has one long section. It is about 107 feet (32.6 meters) long. The bridge is also about 14 feet (4.3 meters) wide. It sits on stone foundations without any mortar. The bridge is about 11 feet (3.4 meters) above the river.
The sides of the bridge are covered with vertical wooden boards. It has a metal roof shaped like a triangle. The openings at each end are shaped like rounded arches. There are also openings on the side walls. These let light into the bridge.
A Look Back in Time: The Bridge's History
The Coombs Covered Bridge was built in 1837. This was less than 20 years after Ithiel Town created the special design used for the bridge. This design is called a "Town lattice truss." It uses a criss-cross pattern of wooden beams.
It is thought that Anthony Coombs or his son, Anthony Coombs Jr., built the bridge. They lived nearby at the time. The bridge has been repaired and updated several times. Major renovations happened in 1969 and again in 1997. These updates help keep the old bridge strong and safe for everyone to use.
