History of Swanzey

Swanzey was first established in 1733 and called "Lower Ashuelot." It was one of the "fort towns" created by Governor Jonathan Belcher of Massachusetts. These towns had forts to help protect the area. Swanzey saw many battles during a conflict known as King George's War. Because of the fighting, people left the town for three years in 1747.

The town was re-established on July 2, 1753, by Governor Benning Wentworth. It was renamed "Swanzey," likely because some early settlers had a connection to Swansea in Wales. Swanzey is located on the Ashuelot River. West Swanzey became a town known for its textile mills, which made fabric. East Swanzey was famous for making wooden buckets for many years. By 1859, the population was 2,106.

The town has four historic covered bridges. It was also the home of a famous actor named Denman Thompson. He became well-known for playing a character called "Joshua Whitcomb" in his play The Old Homestead. Every summer, residents still perform Thompson's play at an outdoor theater called the Potash Bowl.

Some people thought that a tree in Swanzey inspired the poet Joyce Kilmer to write his famous 1913 poem "Trees". However, family records show that the poem was actually written in Mahwah, New Jersey.
