A Look Back at Coomonte's History
The first records of Coomonte date back to the Late Middle Ages. These old documents mention the Church of San Juan (Saint John Baptist). They also talk about its priests and gifts given to the San Esteban de Nogales monastery. During the 1300s and 1400s, many papers mentioned the "concejo" (council) of Coomonte. Most of these old documents were court orders.
Coomonte in the 1500s
In the early 1500s, the town council of Coomonte hired a Dutch painter named Juan de Holanda. He was hired to create the altar for the church. Later in that century, soldiers from Coomonte joined the wars of the King of Spain. For example, in 1580, they helped King Philip II when he added Portugal to the Spanish Crown.
Challenges in the 1600s
The 1600s were a tough time for Coomonte. The Órbigo river flooded, causing a lot of damage. This led to a decrease in the town's population. During this century, many court orders and census records were also created.
Life in the 1700s
We know a lot more about Coomonte in the 1700s. This is thanks to the Catastro of Ensenada. This important survey gave us details about the town's economy and the jobs people had. It even mentioned the traditional wineries. These wineries were used by families to make wine for themselves.
