Cooper Township got its name from a woman named Sarah Sabina Cooper. She was the wife of Horace H. Comstock. Horace Comstock was one of the first people to settle in this area. He also founded a nearby town called Comstock. Sarah Cooper was also the niece of a famous writer, James Fenimore Cooper.
