A Look Back at Cooperton's History
The area where Cooperton now stands was first planned in 1899 by a man named Frank Cooper. He wanted to create a new community. At first, it was going to be called Cooper.
Frank Cooper had a plan to help people settle in the area. This land was part of the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Reservation, which was opening up for new settlers in August 1901. Instead of a land run, the land was given out by a lottery system. Frank Cooper asked for and received 320 acres for the people in his settlement group. The town's name had to be changed to Cooperton because there was already another community named Cooper in the territory.
By 1910, Cooperton had 100 residents. The town's population grew to its largest size of 187 people by 1940. After that, the number of people living in Cooperton slowly started to decrease. By the year 2000, only 20 people lived there.
