How Gotebo Got Its Name
A few months before the town was founded, a railroad station was built nearby. Officials from the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway named this station Gotebo. They chose this name to honor a well-known Kiowa chief. Chief Gotebo (1847-1927) was an important figure. He was one of the first Kiowa people to be baptized at the Rainy Mountain Church. He is buried at the Rainy Mountain Indian Cemetery, located between Gotebo and Mountain View. Soon after, the town's post office changed its name from Harrison to Gotebo, and the town officially became Gotebo.
