Mountain View is a small town located in Kiowa County, Oklahoma, in the United States. In 2020, about 740 people lived there. You can find it about 23 miles east of Hobart, right where two main roads, Oklahoma State Highway 9 and Oklahoma State Highway 115, meet.
History of Mountain View
Mountain View started thanks to the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, or 'Rock Island' for short. In 1899, this railroad built a new line that ended near a small tent city called Oakdale. Oakdale already had a store and a post office.
On October 9, 1900, the Oakdale post office changed its name to Mountain View. This new name honored the beautiful Wichita Mountains nearby.
In 1903, the whole town of Mountain View picked up and moved. They relocated to a spot closer to the railroad tracks. By 1904, the move was complete. The town even called itself "the City in the Woods."
Mountain View became an important place for moving cattle. Ranchers would unload cattle from trains here. The cattle would then graze on land that was once part of the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Reservation. After grazing, they would continue their journey to markets. By 1910, the town had grown to 855 people.
A famous person named Jacob Aldolphus Bryce (also known as Delf A. 'Jelly' Bryce) was born in Mountain View in 1906. He became a special agent for the FBI. He was known for being an amazing marksman (someone who shoots very well) and for his incredibly fast draw with a gun. He was also known for his stylish way of dressing.
