The Coorparoo Fire Station is a special old building in Coorparoo, Brisbane, Queensland. It used to be a fire station but is now a heritage-listed site. It was designed by a company called Atkinson & Conrad and built in 1935. This building is important because it shows how fire stations were designed and used a long time ago.

The Story of Coorparoo Fire Station

Around 1931, local community groups and people like C. Beak and W. J. Smout really wanted a fire station in their area. They kept asking for one. However, the fire department didn't have enough money to build a new station.

Finally, in March 1935, they borrowed about 22,000 Australian pounds from the Commonwealth Bank. This money helped them build the new station.

The Coorparoo Fire Station officially opened on Thursday, September 26, 1935. A local politician named John Innes Brown opened it. The station had a very modern fire truck called a Dennis turbine fire engine. This station helped keep people safe in Coorparoo, Camp Hill, and Holland Park.

The fire station stopped being used before 2003. Many older fire stations like this one became too small. They couldn't fit the bigger, more modern fire trucks that were needed.

Why This Building is Special

The former Coorparoo Fire Station was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on June 11, 2003. This means it's a protected building because it meets certain important rules.

A Look at Queensland's History

This old fire station helps us understand how Queensland's history changed. It shows how fire stations in Brisbane were improved in the 1930s. The Queensland Government built many new stations during this time. This building was the very first one designed in this new way. It was used as a fire station from 1935 to 1976.

What a 1930s Fire Station Looked Like

The Coorparoo Fire Station is a great example of how fire stations in Brisbane were planned in the 1930s. Downstairs, it had offices and a big room for the fire trucks. Upstairs, there was a home for the fire chief. The inside parts, both for work and living, still look a lot like they did back then.

Its Unique Look and Design

This building has a special look and design. It's a simple but strong building that was made to be useful. With its clear horizontal lines and common building materials, it's easy to spot on Cavendish Road. It fits well with the homes around it and is a local landmark.

Connected to Important People

The Coorparoo Fire Station is a good example of the work done by the architects Atkinson & Conrad. Mr. Atkinson, through his different companies, worked on fire stations in Brisbane for a long time. He started in 1890 with the main fire station headquarters. His companies designed many fire stations across Brisbane. This building also shows early modern design ideas. These ideas might have helped make similar styles popular.
