Television Career
The Real World: Back to New York
When she was 21, Coral Smith was a part-time student and nanny in San Francisco. She decided to try out for MTV's popular reality TV show, The Real World. After a casting special, she was chosen for the show's tenth season, which was filmed in New York City.
During her season in 2001, Smith had a serious disagreement with her housemate, Mike Mizanin. The disagreement was about race and culture. Smith and another housemate, Malik Cooper, were offended by some of the views Mizanin shared.
Instead of just arguing, Coral and the other housemates decided to teach Mizanin. They taught him about important parts of Black culture and history, like the life of Malcolm X. Smith later said she was known on her season for being assertive and outspoken, always speaking her mind.
Appearances on The Challenge
Smith competed in six seasons of The Challenge, a show where former Real World cast members compete in difficult tasks. She was a strong competitor and made it to the final mission in four of the six seasons she was on.
During one season, Fresh Meat, Smith had to leave the competition early. Her partner got hurt, and she also injured her leg, so the producers removed them from the game.
On another season, Battle of the Sexes 2, she formed a close friendship with Abram Boise from Road Rules: South Pacific. Smith said they were very different people, but they learned a lot from each other. She described their connection as a "beautiful, beautiful friendship" and said she had never met anyone like him before.
In 2008, Smith appeared on The Gauntlet III. She chose to leave the show before it ended. She later explained that she left because she did not agree with the behavior of some of her teammates.
Personal Life
After her time on reality television, Smith moved to San Francisco. She worked as a writer and hosted an online travel show.
On June 22, 2013, Smith gave birth to her daughter, Charlie Beatrice.
