The Coraopolis station is an old train station in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1896 by the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad. The station was designed by architects Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge. It has a unique style called Richardsonian Romanesque.
A Special Old Building
The Coraopolis station is very important for its architecture. The Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation says its design shows a key part of the Pittsburgh area's building history. This foundation helps protect important old buildings and places.
The station was built in the late 1890s. It was part of a big plan to expand train services to towns near Pittsburgh. Two other similar stations were built around the same time in Glassport and New Castle.
In 1979, the Coraopolis station was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a special list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important to American history. Being on this list helps protect the building. The station was still owned by the railroad at that time.
Plans for the Future
People have big plans for the Coraopolis station. In 1999, a group called the Coraopolis Economic Revitalization Corporation suggested making it a museum. They also wanted to create a "Coraopolis Station Square" around it.
In 2012, the station was added to another important list. This was the List of Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation Historic Landmarks. This shows how special the building is to the area.
There are plans to turn the old station into a cafe and a history museum. The cafe would have space for about 75 people. In 2014, it was thought that about $1.2 million would be needed for this project.
In 2015, a group called the Coraopolis Community Development Foundation raised $5,000. This money was used to help make the building stronger. The foundation is also trying to get a larger grant of $250,000. This money would help move the project forward. The station is also next to the future Ohio River Greenway Trail. This trail will connect the station to the Montour Trail Extension.
