Corbera d'Ebre has a very important history. It was heavily damaged during the Spanish Civil War.
The Battle of the Ebro
The town was almost completely destroyed during a very important battle. This was the Battle of the Ebro, which happened in 1938. Even though the lower part of the town was rebuilt, the upper part was left as it was. This area is known as Poble Vell (Old Town). It includes the old church on the hill. This area stands as a powerful reminder of the war.
Remembering History
Corbera d'Ebre has a special center to help people learn about the war. It is called the Centre d'interpretació de la batalla de l'Ebre. This center is run by a group called COMEBE. COMEBE was started in 2001. Its goal is to remember the history of the areas where the Battle of the Ebro took place. This battle was the longest and bloodiest of the Spanish Civil War. The center has marked paths that you can follow to explore the area.
International Soldiers
During the war, many international soldiers came to Spain to help. One group was the Lincoln-Washington Battalion from the International Brigades. In March 1938, these soldiers were in the Corbera area. However, the town had already been taken by the other side. Some American soldiers were captured here.
Later, the Lincoln Battalion regrouped near the Ebro River. They prepared to join the Ebro offensive. After a lot of fighting, they were back near Corbera. In September, the Spanish Prime Minister, Juan Negrín, decided to send all international troops home. So, the Lincoln Battalion left the region.
War Museum
The town also has a museum. It displays items and memories from the Civil War. This helps visitors understand what happened during that time.
