Scientific classification

The Cordillera Central salamander (Bolitoglossa nigrescens) is a special type of salamander. It belongs to a group called the Plethodontidae family. These salamanders are unique because they don't have lungs! Instead, they breathe through their skin and the lining of their mouths.

This salamander is found only in one place: Costa Rica. When an animal or plant lives naturally in just one specific area, we say it is endemic to that place.

Where Does It Live?

The Cordillera Central salamander makes its home in wet mountain forests. These forests are found in warm, tropical parts of the world. They need a lot of moisture to survive because they breathe through their skin.

Why Is It Special?

Being endemic to Costa Rica means this salamander is a truly unique creature. You won't find it living in the wild anywhere else on Earth. This makes it very important to protect its home.

What Threats Does It Face?

Sadly, the Cordillera Central salamander is facing a big problem. Its natural habitat is slowly disappearing. This is called habitat loss. When forests are cut down or changed, these salamanders lose their homes and the places they need to find food and water. This puts their future at risk.
