Coree is a small community located in the central part of the Riverina region in New South Wales, Australia. It's a quiet place, situated about 43 kilometres (27 miles) west of Jerilderie and 48 kilometres (30 miles) east of Conargo. In 2006, Coree had a population of 91 people. The name 'Coree' might have come from an Aboriginal word that means 'charcoal'.

Discovering Coree's History

Coree has a bit of history, even for a small community.

Early Days and the Post Office

One interesting part of Coree's past is its old Post Office. It first opened its doors on 15 March 1875. However, it didn't stay open for very long and closed down in 1892. This shows how communities can change over time.

Coree's Sporting Spirit

Sports have always been important in Australian communities, and Coree was no different!

Football Fun in Coree

The Coree Football Club was a local team that played in the Southern Riverina Football Association (SRFA). They were active between 1916 and 1932. The team had some good moments, including reaching the grand final in 1929. They played against Finley in that big game, but Finley ended up winning. Even so, getting to the grand final was a great achievement for the Coree team!
