Cornelis Schut III (born around 1629 – died 1685) was a talented painter from Flanders (which is now part of Belgium). He spent his whole life working in Seville, Spain. Cornelis Schut was one of the most important Flemish painters in Seville during his time. His painting style was very similar to another famous artist, Murillo.

Life of a Painter

Cornelis Schut was born in Antwerp, a city in Flanders. He learned how to paint from his uncle, who was also a well-known painter named Cornelis Schut.

Cornelis Schut III moved to Seville, Spain, with his father. His father worked for the Spanish king as an engineer. We know Cornelis was in Seville by 1653. The next year, he joined the local painters' group.

He became friends with a Flemish sculptor named José de Arce. Cornelis even married de Arce's wife's sister. They had two daughters together.

Building a Career

With help from José de Arce, Cornelis Schut got many painting jobs. In 1655, he took on his first student in his art studio. He taught many other students too.

Some of his students, like Manual Gallardo and Juan Antonop Lopes, became experts in adding color to retables. Retables are large, decorated structures behind church altars. Schut's studio also helped his brother-in-law, de Arce, by coloring his sculptures.

Leading the Art Academy

In 1660, Cornelis Schut helped start the Academy of Fine Arts in Seville. He became a drawing teacher there. In 1672, he was chosen to be a president of the academy. He shared this role with Murillo and Francisco Herrera the Younger.

He was re-elected president four years later. Cornelis Schut was very generous to the academy. He often paid for art models himself and gave prizes to students.

Later Years

Cornelis Schut stayed close with other artists in Seville. He also had good relationships with Flemish and Dutch traders in the city. He passed away in Seville in 1685. Even though he had a successful career, he faced financial difficulties at the end of his life. This was because the treatment for his serious illness was very expensive.

His Artworks

Most of Cornelis Schut's paintings are still in Seville. Some can also be found in Cádiz and other places in Spain. He painted many different kinds of art. These included history paintings (pictures of important events), portraits (pictures of people), and still lifes (pictures of objects).

Most of his dated works were made in the 1660s. He always remembered his Flemish background. However, he was also greatly influenced by Murillo's work. This led him to develop a style that was a mix of Flemish art and Murillo's way of painting. This blend of styles was common in Seville's art during the 1600s.

Many of his drawings have been saved. They are known for being smooth and lively. His drawing style was so similar to Murillo's that sometimes people thought Murillo had drawn them!

Major Projects

His biggest jobs came from the church leaders at Seville Cathedral. He also painted many pieces for private people and traders. This is why he worked in so many different styles and why his art is spread across Spain.

He created many versions of the Immaculate Conception painting. This is a religious theme. His paintings on this subject were very similar to how Murillo painted them.
