Coronado is a small, unincorporated community located in Wichita County, Kansas, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Coronado is situated a few miles east of the town of Leoti.
History of Coronado
Coronado was officially planned and laid out in 1885. This community became famous for being involved in a major conflict known as a "county seat fight."
The County Seat Fight
In the late 1800s, towns often competed to become the "county seat." The county seat is the main town in a county where the government offices are located. Being the county seat brought a lot of importance and growth to a town.
On February 27, 1887, Coronado was part of a serious conflict with people from nearby Leoti. This event was a major part of the county seat fight in Wichita County, Kansas. After the conflict, several well-known lawmen from Dodge City, including Wyatt Earp and Bat Masterson, arrived to help restore peace.
There was also a small town called Farmer City located between Coronado and Leoti. Some people hoped Farmer City would become the county seat, which might have ended the disagreements. However, Leoti eventually won the right to be the county seat. Today, Coronado and Farmer City are mostly farmland.
Post Office Services
Coronado had its own post office for several years. It operated from 1886 until 1899, helping residents send and receive mail during that time.
