Farmer City is a ghost town located in Wichita County, Kansas, United States. A ghost town is a place that was once a busy community but is now mostly empty. These towns often become deserted when the main reason people lived there, like a mine or a railroad, disappears.

Why Did Farmer City Become a Ghost Town?

Farmer City was created with a special purpose in mind. It was hoped that this new town would become the "county seat" for Wichita County. A county seat is the most important town in a county. It's where the main government offices are located, like the courthouse.

The County Seat Competition

Back then, two other towns in Wichita County, Leoti and Coronado, were strongly competing to become the county seat. Both towns wanted the honor and the benefits that came with it. This competition was quite intense.

A Compromise Town

To try and solve the disagreement between Leoti and Coronado, Farmer City was suggested as a compromise. The idea was that if neither of the fighting towns could agree, perhaps a new, neutral town could take on the role of the county seat.

The Outcome

However, the plan for Farmer City did not work out. Leoti eventually won the competition and became the official county seat of Wichita County. Once Leoti was chosen, Farmer City no longer had a reason to exist as a major settlement. Soon after, Farmer City, along with most of Coronado, slowly faded away and became a ghost town.
