The Corral de Comedias de Alcalá de Henares is a very old theater in Alcalá de Henares, Spain. It is one of the oldest theaters still standing in Europe! It was built a long time ago, between 1601 and 1602. The person who designed it was an architect named Francisco Sánchez.
This theater was first built as a corral de comedias. This means it was an open-air courtyard theater, a bit like a modern outdoor stage. However, it's not open-air anymore. A roof was added in 1769 during a big rebuilding project. Later, in the 1800s, it became a romantic theater. In the early 1900s, it even became a cinema! These changes made the building look very different. Luckily, it has been carefully restored to its original style.
What it's Like Today
The Corral de Comedias is still a busy and active theater today. It can seat about 200 people for shows. Since 2005, a group called the Fundación Teatro La Abadía has been in charge of running it. They make sure this historic place continues to host plays and performances for everyone to enjoy.
