The Corriente River near Esquina, Argentina.

The Corriente River (which means "Current River" in Spanish) is a river located in the Corrientes province of Argentina. This area is part of the Argentine Mesopotamia, a region between two large rivers.

The Corriente River starts from the Itatí Lagoon, found in the central-northern part of the province. It plays a very important role by draining a huge area of the Iberá Wetlands. This wetland system covers about 13,000 square kilometers (about 5,000 square miles).

As the river flows, it moves southwest through many marshy areas, called bañados. Eventually, it empties into the flood plain of the mighty Paraná River. This meeting point is close to the city of Esquina. The Corriente River helps to keep the wetlands healthy and provides water for many plants and animals.

Exploring the Corriente River's Journey

The Corriente River's path is quite interesting. It starts in a lagoon and then winds its way through vast wetlands. These wetlands are like giant sponges, holding a lot of water.

The Iberá Wetlands Connection

The Iberá Wetlands are one of the most important freshwater wetlands in the world. The Corriente River is a key part of this system. It helps to carry water from the wetlands to the Paraná River. This connection is vital for the ecosystem. Many different kinds of wildlife, including capybaras, caimans, and many bird species, live in and around these wetlands. The river's flow supports their habitats.

Meeting the Paraná River

The Corriente River eventually joins the Paraná River. The Paraná is one of the longest rivers in South America. The area where they meet is a flood plain. This means the land can get covered by water when the rivers are high. This natural flooding helps to enrich the soil and support unique plant life.
