College Years and Track & Field Success
After high school, Cory went to the University of Miami. He played football for the Miami Hurricanes from 2007 to 2010. While playing football, he was also a member of the Hurricanes' track and field team. Cory was very good at hurdles, which are races where athletes jump over barriers. He won the 2009 ACC Indoor Championship in the 60-meter hurdles. The next year, in 2010, he won the ACC Outdoor Championship in the 110-meter hurdles.
Playing in the NFL
After college, Cory Nelms hoped to play in the NFL. In the 2011 NFL draft, he was rated as one of the top free safeties, another defensive position. Even though he was not chosen in the draft, he still got a chance to play. On July 27, 2011, he signed with the San Francisco 49ers.
He was released by the 49ers on September 3, 2011. However, he was quickly signed to the team's practice squad the very next day. Later that year, on November 19, 2012, Cory joined the practice squad of the Oakland Raiders. He worked hard and was promoted to the Raiders' main team on December 28, 2012.
