Cory Paterson (born on July 14, 1987) is a former professional rugby league player from Australia. He played as a second-row forward, which is a strong position in the middle of the field.
Cory played for several teams during his career. These included the Newcastle Knights, North Queensland Cowboys, and Wests Tigers in Australia's top league, the NRL. He also played for teams in England, like Hull Kingston Rovers, Leigh Centurions, and Salford Red Devils in the Super League. Later, he played for the Toronto Wolfpack and Leigh in the Championship. Besides rugby, Cory is also a professional boxer.
Early Life and Rugby Beginnings
Cory Paterson was born in Perth, Western Australia. This is a city on the west coast of Australia.
Junior Rugby League
Cory started playing junior rugby league in his hometown of Perth. He played for a team called the South Perth Lions. When he was older, he went to St Francis Xavier's College, Hamilton. In 2005, he was chosen to represent Australia as a schoolboy player. This was a big achievement for him.
Professional Rugby League Career
Cory Paterson had a long and exciting career in professional rugby league. He played for many different clubs in Australia and England.
Playing for the Newcastle Knights
In 2007, Cory Paterson joined the main team squad for the Newcastle Knights. He played his first game in round 2 of that year. The Knights won that game against the St. George Illawarra Dragons.
After the 2008 season, Cory was chosen for the Prime Minister's XIII team. This team played against the Papua New Guinea national team. In 2009, Cory took a break from some NRL matches. He returned to play well in the 2010 season. That year, he was picked for the Indigenous All Stars squad. He played for them again in 2011. Later in 2011, he left the Knights.
Time with the North Queensland Cowboys
After leaving Newcastle, Cory Paterson quickly joined the North Queensland Cowboys. He signed a contract to play for the rest of the 2011 NRL season and two more seasons. Cory converted to Islam during the 2011 season. He sought advice from other Muslim rugby league players about how to manage his training and games during times of fasting.
Cory played 7 games for the Cowboys in his first half-season. He helped them reach the finals and scored 4 tries. In 2012, he played for the Indigenous All Stars again. However, he only played in 2 NRL matches for the Cowboys that year due to injuries.
Moving to Hull Kingston Rovers
On June 27, 2012, Cory signed a two-year deal with Super League team Hull Kingston Rovers in England. While playing for Hull KR, Cory worked well with his teammate Michael Dobson.
Cory also coached the Hawaiian All-stars rugby league team in a match in Hawaii. This match happened during an earthquake, which caused tsunami alerts for the islands.
Joining the Wests Tigers
In August 2013, it was announced that Cory Paterson would join the NRL club Wests Tigers. He signed a one-year deal for the 2014 season. After playing 96 NRL games in total, Cory announced he was retiring from rugby league. He wanted to follow his dream of becoming a professional heavyweight boxer.
Return to Rugby with Salford Red Devils
At the end of 2014, Cory Paterson decided to return to rugby league. He signed a one-year deal to play for the Salford club in the 2015 season. This meant he got to play with his former teammate Michael Dobson again.
Playing for Leigh Centurions
In September 2015, it was announced that Cory would join Leigh Centurions for the 2016 RFL Championship. In January 2016, he was made one of the team's vice-captains.
Toronto Wolfpack Experience
In December 2017, Cory Paterson joined the Toronto Wolfpack on a two-year deal. This team is based in Canada but plays in the English rugby league system.

Both of his wins were by knockout.
