Cory DeVante Williams (born November 9, 1992), known online as CoryxKenshin, is a popular American YouTuber, writer, and actor. He started his YouTube channel on April 26, 2009. Cory is famous for his funny videos where he plays scary video games. In 2021, he was one of the top four creators in the United States based on how many new followers he gained.

Internet Career

CoryxKenshin began making videos for YouTube in 2009. At first, he created funny short skits. Later, he started playing popular horror games like Five Nights at Freddy's (2014) and Bloodborne (2015). He also has a series called "Spooky Scary Sunday" where he reacts to horror short films.

Cory also plays other types of video games, including big-budget games known as triple-A games, like Elden Ring (2022). His video playing the rhythm game Friday Night Funkin' (2020) was one of the most-watched videos in the U.S. in 2021. Reviewers praised his humor and how he combined music and gameplay in that video. Besides his let's plays, Cory is known for his energetic and light-hearted personality.

In 2021, CoryxKenshin was ranked as the fourth top creator in the United States. Many of his videos have been so popular that they stayed on YouTube's trending page for days. He is also known for taking breaks from uploading videos, sometimes for several months. In 2019, he shared a video talking about the challenges of making content and how it affected his well-being.

In 2023, CoryxKenshin appeared in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie as a taxi driver. He also uploaded a video reacting to the movie's trailer when it first came out. On December 13, 2024, after a 17-month break, Cory posted a video announcing his own manga series called Monsters We Make. Just two days later, his channel reached 20 million subscribers!

YouTube: Fairness in Content Review

On August 24, 2022, CoryxKenshin posted a video discussing his concerns about how YouTube reviews videos. He wondered if favoritism or other biases might affect the process. He shared an experience where one of his videos, which showed him playing the horror game The Mortuary Assistant, was "age-restricted." This meant fewer people could see it, and it earned less money.

Cory was confused because many other YouTubers had videos of the same game that were not restricted. He appealed YouTube's decision, but it was rejected. He then sent a clip of a more popular YouTuber, Markiplier, playing the same game to his YouTube partner representative. Instead of restricting Markiplier's video, YouTube suddenly unrestricted Cory's video.

This sudden change made Cory even more curious. He contacted his representative again, who then asked YouTube's policy team. After that, YouTube restricted *every* video on the platform that showed The Mortuary Assistant. This led Cory to believe that YouTube might treat larger creators differently, or that there could be other unfair factors in their review decisions.

Many other YouTubers, including Jacksepticeye, Ludwig, GothamChess, Phillip DeFranco, berleezy, Deestroying, and Cr1TiKaL, supported Cory online. His video about this issue became the number one trending video on YouTube.

Personal Life

Cory DeVante Williams lives in Farmington Hills, Michigan. He is a dedicated Christian.

In 2010, Cory started attending Michigan State University. He had hoped to go to the University of Michigan, but he wasn't accepted at first. He studied Media Arts at Michigan State for two years. Even though he did well, he still thought about his dream school. His father encouraged him to apply to the University of Michigan again, and in 2012, he was accepted!

At the University of Michigan, Cory changed his major to Computer science. This meant his first two years of college didn't count towards his new degree, so he had to start over as a freshman. In 2015, during his junior year, Cory made a big decision: he took a one-year break from college to focus completely on his YouTube channel. He decided that if his channel wasn't making enough money by May 1, 2016, he would go back to finish his degree.

In 2017, Cory shared that he was born with ectodermal dysplasia. This is a rare genetic condition that affected his teeth and hair growth on his arms and legs. He also mentioned that he was sometimes bullied in school because of it.

In 2020, Cory temporarily stopped uploading videos due to feeling overwhelmed and sad. He described 2020 as a very difficult year for him, mentioning big events like the COVID-19 pandemic and the murder of George Floyd.
