Career Highlights
YouTube Journey
Markiplier started his first YouTube channel on March 6, 2012. He first planned to upload funny comedy sketches and action videos. He named his channel "Markiplier." This name combines "Mark" and "multiplier," because he planned to play all the characters himself. He later said it was a "really dumb name." Markiplier always loved video games. He decided to make gaming videos as this trend was growing. His first video series was a Let's Play of Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010). His channel gained over 94,000 subscribers in its first year.
At that time, YouTubers with over one thousand subscribers could earn money through YouTube's AdSense program. However, Markiplier had problems with his AdSense account. This stopped him from making money from his videos. So, he had to move to his current channel in April, which was first called "markiplierGAME." He left university the same year to focus on his growing online career. He was only two semesters away from graduating. In early 2014, Markiplier moved to Los Angeles. This helped him be closer to new business chances.
Markiplier and Janet Varney hosted the 2015 South by Southwest Gaming Awards together. He was also featured in YouTube Rewind. He was ranked sixth among the twenty most influential celebrities for teenagers in the United States. Markiplier and fellow YouTuber Jenna Mae appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in September 2015. This happened after Kimmel made jokes about YouTube and Let's Play videos.
Markiplier started living with fellow YouTubers Daniel Kyre and Ryan Magee. They ran the YouTube channel Cyndago. Cyndago later stopped making videos. Markiplier took a break from YouTube for a month. He returned on October 5. On October 14, his channel reached 10 million subscribers.
In November 2016, Markiplier signed with the talent agency William Morris Endeavor (WME). His first project with WME was his "You're Welcome Tour" in Spring 2017. Markiplier and four other YouTubers—Muyskerm, Barnes, Tyler Schied, and Ethan Nestor—performed thirty-one shows across the United States and Europe. Markiplier told Variety that he was interested in more traditional entertainment. He spent five months planning the tour. It included music, comedy, and improv elements. It also had audience participation. In January 2018, Markiplier began creating special content for Twitch. This was part of a deal with Disney Digital Network.
His YouTube channel reached 20 million subscribers in March. In October 2019, an interactive special called A Heist with Markiplier was released. This was his first YouTube Original. Markiplier and Rooster Teeth produced it. The special follows two burglars, the viewer and Markiplier. It has 31 possible endings. Markiplier had released a similar project called A Date with Markiplier in 2017.
On November 15, 2019, Markiplier started a new channel with fellow YouTuber Ethan Nestor (known as CrankGameplays). It was called Unus Annus, which is Latin for "one year." The plan was to upload a video every day for one year. After that, the channel and all its videos would be deleted. The channel quickly became popular. It gained 1 million subscribers in its first 5 days. It had 4.56 million subscribers in its last few minutes. It also had over 11.5 million video views in its first week. After a final 12-hour live stream, which had over 1.5 million viewers at one time, Markiplier and Nestor deleted the channel on November 14, 2020.
Film, Television, and Podcasts
Since 2017, Markiplier has voiced the character 5.0.5 in the Cartoon Network series Villainous.
Markiplier starred in and helped produce a podcast drama called The Edge of Sleep. In this story, a night watchman finds out that everyone who fell asleep the night before has died. He must try to stay awake. This was the first project from QCode's Wood Elf label. The Edge of Sleep started in September 2019. It was renewed for a second season in 2023. Markiplier plays his role again in a television remake. This TV show is produced by New Regency. Lio Tipton and Eve Harlow also star in it. It was released in 2024 and quickly became one of the Top 10 shows on Amazon Prime Video.
Markiplier, along with Barnes and Muyskens, hosts the podcast Distractible. This podcast is also produced by Wood Elf. It became number one on Spotify and Apple Podcasts when it launched in May 2021. Markiplier and Scheid also started Go! My Favorite Sports Team in February 2022. This is a comedy podcast where Scheid, who loves sports, and Markiplier, who doesn't know much about them, talk about sports.
The two-part In Space with Markiplier (2022) was also produced by Markiplier and Rooster Teeth. It was his second interactive YouTube Original. The viewer plays the role of the captain of a spaceship that is falling apart. Markiplier plays the head engineer. In Space was nominated for Outstanding Interactive Media at the first Children's and Family Emmys Awards.
Deadline announced in March 2023 that Markiplier had signed with United Talent Agency (UTA). A week later, Spotify announced that it would exclusively host new video episodes of Distractible and Go! My Favorite Sports Team. Markiplier also said he was working on an upcoming film. On April 21, Deadline announced that Markiplier had started making a film adaptation of the 2022 indie horror game Iron Lung by David Szymanski. Markiplier is directing, producing, writing, and paying for Iron Lung himself. The film stars him and Caroline Rose Kaplan.
Other Projects
Helping Others and Charity
Markiplier has taken part in many charity live streams and fundraisers. Most of his fundraising has been for cancer charities. Business Ventures
Markiplier joined the board of the comic book publisher Red Giant Entertainment in November 2014. In June of that year, at San Diego Comic-Con, he co-hosted a panel. He was with people from the company, including CEO Benny R. Powell, and writers David Campiti, Mort Castle, David Lawrence, and Brian Augustyn. In 2016, it was announced that he would appear in his own line of comics.
In October 2018, Markiplier and fellow YouTuber Seán McLoughlin launched a clothing line called Cloak. It is made for the gaming community. Streamer Imane Anys joined Cloak as a partner and creative director in 2020.

Content Creation
Markiplier is best known for his Let's Plays of indie horror games. He uploaded his first Let's Play of the 2014 survival horror game Five Nights at Freddy's (FNaF) on August 13, 2014. As of November 2023, this video has over 114 million views. This makes it his most watched Let's Play. The game was released only five days before Markiplier's video. It quickly became very popular after Markiplier and other YouTubers made videos playing it. Viewers loved their "over-the-top" reactions. Markiplier's videos showed his struggles to beat the game's hardest mode. He also tried to figure out the complicated hidden story that the FNaF series is now known for.
For over ten years, Markiplier has consistently made Let's Plays of every game in the FNaF series. These are some of his most watched and rewatched videos. He is very involved with the game's fandom, which is also part of his own fan base. He made a guest appearance in the launch trailer for Five Nights at Freddy's AR: Special Delivery (2019). In 2023, B. J. Colangelo from /Film wrote that Markiplier was a main reason for FNaF's rise to popularity. Markiplier confirmed he was asked to appear in the 2023 film adaptation of the video game. However, he could not due to scheduling conflicts with his Iron Lung movie. In one of MatPat's Film Theory videos, it was confirmed that Markiplier was supposed to play the night security guard who was killed by the animatronics in the film's opening scene.
