Imane Anys was born in Morocco on May 14, 1996. When she was four years old, her parents moved to Quebec, Canada. She grew up in St. Catharines, Ontario.
Discovering Online Games
In middle school, Imane started playing online games like MapleStory. She enjoyed customizing her characters and talking with other players. She later studied chemical engineering at McMaster University. However, she decided to leave university to focus on her streaming career full-time.
Becoming a Streamer
Imane created her Twitch account in June 2013. She began streaming later that year. She bought her first computer for streaming after reaching a high rank in the game League of Legends. Her name "Pokimane" is a mix of "Pokémon" and her first name, Imane.
Rise to Twitch Stardom
In 2017, Pokimane gained 450,000 followers on Twitch. This made her one of the top 100 most-followed accounts on the platform. The Shorty Awards even named her the Best Twitch Streamer of the year. They said her gameplay and comments on League of Legends helped her become very popular. She even appeared in a trailer for a new League of Legends game mode.
Pokimane has streamed many games, including Fortnite. In 2018, she played Fortnite in a special event at E3. This event paired streamers with famous people. In May 2024, Pokimane shared that she was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a health condition. She also supported Kamala Harris in the 2024 United States presidential election.
