History of Costilla
The village of Costilla was first known as San Miguel. It was named after its church. On November 1, 1861, the Territory of Colorado created 17 original counties. San Miguel was chosen as the first county seat for Costilla County, Colorado Territory.
When a post office opened on November 13, 1862, the village picked a new name: Costilla. This new name might have been to show its new importance. In 1863, people living in the county voted to move the county seat. It moved about 17 miles (27 km) north to San Luis.
Later, in 1869, a U.S. government survey found something interesting. It showed that Costilla was actually located in the Taos County, New Mexico Territory. It took a few more years, but on October 21, 1872, the village post office was officially renamed Costilla, New Mexico Territory.
