Place of origin England

A cottage loaf is a special kind of bread that comes from England. It's known for its unique and interesting shape.

What Makes a Cottage Loaf Special?

The cottage loaf has a very distinct look. It's shaped like two round loaves stacked on top of each other. The top loaf is smaller than the bottom one. This makes it look a bit like a traditional cottage with a roof. Other breads, like the French brioche, sometimes have a similar stacked shape.

The Story Behind Its Shape and Name

No one knows exactly when or how the cottage loaf got its unique shape. It might have been around for hundreds of years! A famous food writer, Elizabeth David, thought the shape might have helped bakers save space. Old bread ovens were often small. Stacking loaves could have allowed more bread to bake at once.

The name "cottage loaf" didn't appear in writing until the mid-1800s. Before that, people might have called it something else. There was even an oblong (rectangle-shaped) version once. It was known as a "cottage brick" and was common in London.

Why Are Cottage Loaves Rare Today?

You don't see cottage loaves in many bakeries anymore. They used to be quite common. However, they are tricky and take a lot of time to make. Also, because they are round, they are not as easy to slice as other breads. Most people prefer sliced bread that fits easily into a toaster.
