Cottonville was established in Richland Township before the American Civil War began. A historian named James Whitcomb Ellis described it as a "thriving little town" during that time. This means it was a busy and successful place.

What Was Cottonville Like?

In its early days, Cottonville was a lively place with several businesses. It had two general stores, where people could buy all sorts of goods. There were also two shoe shops, a blacksmith to work with metal, and a wagon shop for making and fixing wagons. The community also had a grocery store, a post office for sending mail, and a saloon.

Cottonville also had a Methodist church. For a while, the church shared a preacher with the nearby town of Lamotte.

Changes Over Time

By 1902, Cottonville had a population of 41 people. However, the town started to become smaller and less busy. This happened because a railroad was built to the nearby town of Lamotte. When the railroad came, more people and businesses moved to Lamotte.

By 1910, Cottonville had only one store and the blacksmith shop left. The Methodist church in Cottonville was no longer used around this time. The Cottonville post office, which had served the community for fifty years, closed in 1900.
