Cottrell is a small, undeveloped community located in northern Clackamas County, Oregon, in the United States. It's known as a "crossroads community" because it's found where different roads meet.
History of Cottrell
How Cottrell Got Its Name
Cottrell was named after Georgia Andrews, whose maiden name was Cottrell. She was married to Charles Ida Andrews in 1893. Georgia often used the name 'Georgie'.
Moving to Oregon
Georgia and her mother, Carrie Arabella Cottrell, moved to Oregon from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They came to Oregon after Georgia's father, George Cottrell, passed away in a train accident. Both Georgia and her mother later passed away in Ashland, in 1953 and 1943, respectively.
Past Services and Landmarks
Cottrell once had its own post office, which operated from 1894 until 1904. It's thought that the post office closed when mail delivery services, called Rural Free Delivery, started reaching the area.
Even today, you can find places named after the community, like Cottrell Road and Cottrell School, which is about a mile east of the main area. There was also a Cottrell station on the old Mount Hood Electric Railway line, located about a mile north of Cottrell. This railway station, which is no longer in use, was actually just across the county line in Multnomah County.
