Countess Athena of Monpezat was born Princess Athena of Denmark on January 24, 2012. She is a member of the Danish royal family. Athena is the younger child and only daughter of Prince Joachim and Princess Marie of Denmark. She is the youngest grandchild of Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik. Athena is also the niece of King Frederik X. She is currently ninth in the line of succession to the Danish throne.

About Countess Athena

Athena was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, at Rigshospitalet, a large hospital. Her father, Prince Joachim, joked with reporters after her birth about what her name might be. She has two older half-brothers, Nikolai and Felix. They are from her father's first marriage. She also has an older brother named Henrik.

Her Christening and Names

Following Danish royal traditions, Athena's names were kept private until her christening. This special ceremony took place on May 20, 2012. It was held at Møgeltønder Church, the same church where her older brothers Felix and Henrik were also christened. She was given the names Athena Marguerite Françoise Marie. These names honor both of her grandmothers and her mother. Her godparents included her maternal uncles and some close friends of her parents.

Her School Life

On August 11, 2017, Athena started school at Sct. Joseph Søstrenes Skole. This is a private Catholic school in Ordrup, Denmark. Her brother Henrik also attended this school. In 2019, Athena and her family moved to France. She then enrolled at a private school called EIB Monceau in Paris, along with her brother.

Titles and Royal Role

From her birth until January 1, 2023, Athena was known as "Her Highness Princess Athena of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat." In September 2022, her grandmother, Queen Margrethe II, made a decision about the titles of Prince Joachim's children.

Since January 1, 2023, Athena has been known as "Her Excellency Countess Athena of Monpezat." Even though her title changed, she and her three brothers still have their places in the line of succession to the Danish throne. This means they can still become king or queen one day, if the time comes.
