Countess Athena of Monpezat was born Princess Athena of Denmark on January 24, 2012. She is a member of the Danish royal family. Her uncle is King Frederik X. Athena is currently ninth in line to the succession to the Danish throne.
About Athena
Athena was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, at Rigshospitalet, which is a university hospital. She has two older half-brothers, Nikolai and Felix. They are from her father's first marriage. She also has an older brother named Henrik.
Her Christening
In Denmark, royal names are often kept secret until the christening ceremony. Athena's christening took place on May 20, 2012. It was held at Møgeltønder Church. Her older brothers, Felix and Henrik, were also christened there.
She was given the names Athena Marguerite Françoise Marie. These names honor both of her grandmothers and her mother. Her godparents include her maternal uncles, Gregory Grandet and Edouard Cavallier. Other godparents are Carina Axelsson, Julie Mirabaud, Diego de Lavandeyra, and Henriette Steenstrup.
Her School Life
On August 11, 2017, Athena started school. She attended Sct. Joseph Søstrenes Skole. This is a Catholic private school in Ordrup, Denmark. Her brother Henrik also went to this school.
In 2019, Athena and her family moved to France. She then enrolled at a private school in Paris called EIB Monceau. Her brother Henrik also joined her at this school.
Her Title Change
From her birth until January 1, 2023, Athena was known as "Her Highness Princess Athena of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat".
In September 2022, Queen Margrethe II made a decision. She decided that the children of her son Joachim would no longer use their princely titles. This change became official on January 1, 2023.
Since then, Athena has been known as "Her Excellency Countess Athena of Monpezat". Even with this change, she and her father's three other children still keep their places in the line of succession to the Danish throne.
