Courtney Young is an American librarian who loves books and learning. She was the leader, or president, of the American Library Association (ALA) from 2014 to 2015. The ALA is a big group for librarians in the United States. On June 30, 2015, her time as ALA President ended, and Sari Feldman became the new president.
Learning and Working
Courtney Young studied at The College of Wooster, where she earned a degree in English in 1996. The next year, she earned another degree from Simmons College. This degree was special for librarians, teaching her how to manage libraries and information.
Today, she works as the University Librarian at Colgate University. This means she helps run the library for a whole university! Before that, she was the Head Librarian and a Professor at Pennsylvania State University, Greater Allegheny campus. She has also worked at other parts of Penn State, and at Michigan State University and Ohio State University.
Awards and Helping Out
In 2011, Courtney Young was named a "Mover & Shaker – Change Agent" by a magazine called Library Journal. This award recognized her for helping libraries and schools become more welcoming to all kinds of people. She worked to make sure everyone felt included.
She also helped the ALA in many ways. She was part of different groups, like the ALA Executive Board. She helped new members and worked on how the ALA could use online tools to connect with people.
Leading the ALA
Courtney Young became the president of the American Library Association at a big meeting in Las Vegas in 2014. She led the group until the next big meeting in San Francisco in 2015. After that meeting, Sari Feldman took over as president.
During her time as president, Courtney Young kept working on important ideas. She focused on making sure libraries were fair and welcoming to everyone. This was part of a special group called the ALA's Special Presidential Task Force on Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. She also helped start a program to help librarians grow in their careers. Plus, she helped the ALA use social media better to share news and connect with people.
In 2024, Courtney Young was chosen to lead the plans for the American Library Association's 150th birthday celebration.
