Cousins Submarines, better known as Cousins Subs, is a popular sandwich shop. It started in 1972 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The company makes and sells delicious sub sandwiches. Today, you can find over 100 Cousins Subs restaurants mainly in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana.

History of Cousins Subs

Cousins Subs was started in 1972 by two cousins, Bill Specht and James Sheppard. They had moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from New Jersey. They really missed the tasty sub sandwiches they used to eat back home.

So, Bill and James decided to open their own sandwich shop. Their very first store was in Milwaukee, at 60th Street and Silver Spring Drive. They even worked with a local baker to create their own special bread. This led to their famous saying: "Better Bread, Better Subs." Many of their first customers were people who had also moved from the East Coast.

Changes and Growth

In 2009, Cousins Subs decided to focus more on its local business. During a tough economic time, they closed over 40 locations. This helped them make sure they could keep serving high-quality food.

In 2013, Cousins Subs created something special called The Make It Better Foundation. This foundation helps improve communities. It focuses on things like health, fighting hunger, and supporting education for young people.

Bill Specht's daughter, Christine Specht-Palmert, became the CEO in 2015. This happened when her father retired.

New Look and Partnerships

Cousins Subs announced a new look in 2016. They planned to open more stores across the Midwest. They also decided to update all their existing restaurants. This included new designs for their stores, logo, packaging, and even staff uniforms. They also added new digital features inside the stores for customers.

Along with these changes, Cousins Subs started working with sports teams. They became sponsors for the Milwaukee Bucks (basketball), Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (baseball), Green Bay Packers (football), and the Wisconsin Badgers (college sports).

Where You Can Find Cousins Subs Today

As of October 2019, there are more than 100 Cousins Subs locations. You can find them across Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. The company is still planning to open new stores in the Midwest with different business partners.

In August 2018, Cousins Subs announced plans to open 40 new stores in the Chicago area by 2025. By July 2021, six of these stores were already open. Cousins also planned to open stores in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. They had stores there before but closed them in 2015. The new plan was to open about six stores each year, but as of August 2021, these new Minnesota stores had not yet opened.
