History of Coxburg
How Coxburg Got Its Name
Coxburg was named after the Cox family. They were one of the first families to settle in this area. They arrived here before the year 1869.
Life in Early Coxburg
Long ago, Coxburg was a busy little community. It had two churches where people could gather. There was also a general store. This store was a place where people could buy many different things they needed.
The Coxburg Post Office
For a time, Coxburg even had its own post office. It opened in 1884. The post office helped people send and receive letters and packages. It closed down in 1908.
The Coxburg Consolidated School
The Coxburg Consolidated School was once a very important place. It was the biggest school in all of Holmes County. The first school building was built in 1932. Sadly, it burned down just three years later, in 1935.
After the fire, Senator Pat Harrison helped the community. He worked to get money from a government program called the Public Works Administration. This program helped build things during a tough time in history. With this help, a second Coxburg school was built in 1936. But in 1959, another fire destroyed this school building too.
