Crabtree, Plymouth facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Crabtree is a small area near Plymouth in the English county of Devon. It used to be a quiet village. Today, it is part of the larger city of Plymouth.

Discovering Crabtree

Crabtree was once a very important stop for travellers. It was located right next to the Plym Estuary. This was a natural stopping point for people on long journeys.

Crabtree's Past

Long ago, Crabtree was a small village. It sat along a special road called a "coaching route." This route went around the top of the Plym Estuary. Travellers would stop here before or after crossing a marshy area called Marsh Mills. From Crabtree, the road continued to Plympton, then to Exeter, and finally to London. It was a busy place for people on the move.

Some other tiny settlements also existed nearby. One of these was called 'Longbridge'.

Crabtree Today

Today, Crabtree looks very different. It is no longer a small village. Instead, it has become part of the city of Plymouth. Many new buildings have been added. You can now find a very large supermarket there. There is also one of the biggest roundabouts in western England. A flyover, which is a bridge for cars, carries the A38 road over the area. You can also find a hotel and a small group of houses.

Crabtree in Art

Even though Crabtree has changed, we can still see what it looked like in the past. The city museum and art gallery in Plymouth has old paintings. The National Trust at nearby Saltram House also has some. These artworks show the old Crabtree at the head of the estuary. They prove it was once a very beautiful spot in the area.
